Dr. Michael Klein

Dr. Michael Klein is the director of the INM-Institute for New Media in Frankfurt, Germany. Dr. Klein studied Physics and Philosophy at the University of Wuppertal from 1980-1983 and went on to receive a degree in Physics at the University of Tübingen, Germany, in 1987. He later earned his PhD in Theoretical Chemistry at the University of Tübingen in 1992 his thesis discussing "Chaotic Hierarchies." While developing his thesis, Michael worked as a scientific assistant at the DIFF-German Institute for Distance Learning and Research in Tübingen and also at the Chair of Theoretical Chemistry of the University of Tübingen. After completing his thesis, Dr. Klein became research assistant for arts and sciences at the Städelschule Frankfurt - University of Fine Arts - from 1992-1994. In 1994 he started his first term as director of the INM-Institute for New Media also in Frankfurt, a position he held until 2000. During this period, Dr. Klein was also managing director of inm-numerical magic gmbh from 1997-1999 and of inm-Network GmbH from 1999-2000, both in Frankfurt. In 2000 Dr. Klein began the position of visiting professor of digital arts at the Escola das Artes at the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, Porto. During his tenure in Portugal, Dr. Klein served as a member of the board of the INM as well as several other activities. From 2000-2002, he was managing director of the web business development of Star-21 Networks AG of Frankfurt and from 2001-2002 he was a member of the managing board of Star-21 Solutions GmbH and also of inm-numerical magic gmbh. In 2002, after management buy-out, Dr. Klein became owner and executive manager of inm-numerical magic gmbh until 2006. In 2005 Dr. Klein again commenced working at the INM-Institute for New Media, this time as executive director, which is his current position.
Dr.Klein's fields of interest include extended lecturing and consulting engagements as well as numerous publications and realizations of research and development projects in the field of the evolution and technology of new media. He also supervises student interns, master and diploma theses; project management, trainings and consulting. He is also an active member of the IHK-Frankfurt am Main (chamber of commerce and industry of Frankfurt).
